About the Oddsox
The Oddsox was born during the winter of 2001/2002 with Norm, Scott & Mark G drinking rather a lot of beer and deciding to make the plunge and set up their own team... how did they get to this point?
Norm and Mark during 2000 were trying to get some kind of recreational sport off the ground to help improve their social scene, both being strangers to Oxford and working in the same company. Norm having an (old, wooden) Softball bat suggested they played that sport. Not having any grasp of the rules or any bases or gloves, a summer of various Softball like games were played in Botley with jumpers for bases. As the summer wore on fewer and fewer people turned up, until it wasn't viable. Then Norm looked up one of his old London Softball contacts and it turned out that there was a living breathing league in Oxford... we made contact with the Greensox and made the move late in 2000.
Both Norm and Mark joined up with the Greensox for 2001, Scott drifted around various teams, he may actually have been an Angel, but I'm sure he rarely played for them!
Anyway we decided that we could do a good job of setting up a team within the league and set to it. The main driving forces was to have a social fun team, who played as good sports-people and had an open and reasonably democratic management. Due to that final point Norm, Mark & Scott were over-ruled by the rest of the team on the name. They wanted "Oximorons" - which is a great name - the majority of the team wanted "Oddsox" and I won't even mention Scott's voting problems...
So, our first season - we had a mixed bunch of players, played well and had lots of fun, however, towards the end of that the season it became obvious that there were two conflicting strands, one group wanting to compete, the other to have fun and socialise. Anyway those competitive players formed the kernel of the Spirits and the Oddsox carried on the way we wanted to be...
